Within those miles, dear armchair musher, you must remember lies the Blowhole. Pull up the map and use your imagination... Cold temps, out over the bay... Winds picking up and precious little separating you from it's icy grip. Not to mention the dogs, who are wondering what the hello-kitty you got them into!
Wait a sec, why use your imagination? The twins captured some video of this stretch 2 years ago, let's take a look (and for a listen, turn up your sound for the wind effect). I love the fact that one of them thought, 'Hey, let's get the camera out!'.
I've seen one other news source give the same ballpark estimate as mine as to when the winner will get into Nome (ADN calling for 5am Alaska time Wed.), so I can't be all wet. And now (drumroll, please)... I'll toss out my call on the twins. They're out of Shaktoolik and not quite halfway to Koyuk as of this writing (race mile 780 per the GPS, in the interests of honesty). That gives them some 200 miles to Nome. Given run/rest times last year and what I believe to be strong, seasoned dogs remaining on their teams, plus the 8hr in White Mountain... Take a long lunch on Thursday, March 19th, cuz they're going to be under the burled arch between noon and 2pm Alaska time.
