Current reports of the trail conditions over sections like the Dalzell Gorge and the Farwell Burn were even worse than last year. While some mushers, and many living along the first portion of the traditional route, regret the change, the majority support it.
The race mileage will be slightly shorter then the traditional route, coming in at 968 miles. This is only the second time in 43 starts that the race is launching from Fairbanks (2003 being the only previous year). Seventy-nine teams are slated to leave the starting line, the 6th largest field in the history of the race.
