And all eyes will be poised on Nome overnight, where we're sure to see this year's winner come in under the burled arch. Jeff King was the first musher into White Mountain at 7:02am AK time today. He'll take his last mandatory 8-hour rest and surely hit the trail right at 3:02pm. If past years are any gauge, he'll need 6 - 7 hrs to run to Safety and another 2 -3 hrs to run to Nome. Aliy is less than 1 hour behind him, though, so it could be an interesting dash across the last 77 miles. I predict we'll have an answer on either side of midnight.
I also have an update from Aaron, our Dropped Dog Correspondent in Anchorage. From Anna's team, Straight, Slash, Taco, and Zuko have been joined back at the kennel by Dollar, sporting a sore left front leg. That leaves 2 dogs still on their way home. From Kristy's team, Jasmine, Duchess, and Senator are joined by Pearl, with a strained pectoral muscle, leaving 3 still on their way home. I believe at, and after, the checkpoint of Unalakleet, dropped dogs are flown on to Nome to await their teams, but I'll continue to provide any updates I get.
